The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) assessments measure students’ knowledge and skills in various subject areas. In addition to the student performance data, NAEP collects contextual data from students, teachers, and school administrators. NAEP results are reported as scale scores, achievement levels, and percentages. This Focus on NAEP illustrates how to interpret NAEP scale scores with an analogy to a temperature scale, as both are interval scales. We begin by describing the properties of interval scales.
