The U.S. Department of Education is a federal executive department of the United States government responsible for overseeing and implementing federal policies and programs related to education. Its primary mission is to promote student achievement and ensure equal access to quality education for all Americans. The Department of Education (ED) was officially established as a separate agency in 1979 and is headquartered in Washington, D.C.
